My name is Christopher Barrett and I'm from Thurles, Co. Tipperary in Ireland. I'm currently studying in the National University of Ireland, Galway. This blog is intended to give my view on various news-worthy stories that pop up in day-to-day life. All views expressed are, therefore, my own.

Politically, I am a member of Fine Gael, a centre-right party and the majority party in Government since March 2011. I'm also an active member in the party's youth wing, Young Fine Gael, having previously served as both Vice Auditor and Auditor of the NUI Galway Branch. While a member of the centre-right Fine Gael, I would identify myself with the social democrat wing of the party; I am socially liberal, but conservative on economic matters.  

It's fair to say that being socially liberal, as I said above, has much to do with my being involved in the activities of the gay community, and I touch on that in many of my blog posts. I am active in the college LGBT society and am an advocate for equal rights for all, not just those discriminated due to sexual orientation. In that regard, I am also an active member of the college debating society, the Lit & Deb, having previously served on the society committee as the Debates Secretary. My role was to organise weekly debates and ensure that we had well-informed guests to spur debate.
